History

In the 1950’s and the 1960’s the Peterborough Minor Hockey Association and the Peterborough Community Church Hockey League each operated “All Star” teams, which competed for the city championships. The winning team, augmented by two or three players, represented the city in the Ontario Minor Hockey Association play-offs. In this era, the 1952-53 Shamrock Bantam team coached by Pat Doherty won the Ontario Championships. This was followed by a championship Midget team, coached by Pat Baker, and a championship Juvenile team, the RCAF Flyers coached by Don Wasson. In 1960-61 a Peewee team coached by Ted Higgins won the Quebec International Peewee Tournament at the Quebec Winter Carnival.

In 1970-71, the Recreation Department of the City of Peterborough, appointed Don Forde as chairman of an “All-Star” committee consisting of three members from each of the two house league organizations to operate teams representing the city. This organization evolved into the Peterborough Minor Hockey Council, which ran what was then called “A” and “B” teams in each division. The teams adopted the colours of the Major Jr. A Petes and the teams became known as the Minor Petes.

In 1990-91, the Peterborough “AAA” zone was established under the jurisdiction of the Peterborough Minor Hockey Council with its own constitution.  With this increased geographical area, which includes all of the city and county of Peterborough, the Peterborough Minor Hockey Council continues with its motto “Tradition-Dedication-Development to provide competitive hockey for players within its zone.
